This is one I wrote in 1998, right after my father died. He became a Christian about 2 years before he died and there were a lot of tensions when he passed away in October. Our family kind of fractured, but is slowly coming back together now.

Dad's Garden

This last year it was larger than ever,
A frenzy of plants to the door.
Dad's garden burst forth with variety,
Green beans, peppers, tomatoes and more.

He began it by studying the literature,
And started with uncommon seeds.
As the seedlings took root and attempted to grow,
With wisdom, he saw to their needs.

Some vines may have tangled with others,
But each plant grew its own unique way.
The labors were shared with the neighbors,
And graced tables at the end of the day.

For the first time this year there were zinnas,
With blooms reaching up towards the sky,
And Mom was secure with the care all around,
And a full vase of zinnias nearby.

As the autumn approached its conclusion,
The garden returned to the soil.
The brown wizened leaves and sturdy wood stakes.
Stood in testimony to Dad's toil.

And now though the garden lies dormant,
Even if nobody lifted a hoe,
Beneath the chilled ground, the seeds hold a promise,
Dad's garden will continue to grow.

LOVED your poem, Quirky...my dad has a garden too...
When my husband left, I braced myself for my parents' "I told you so's". I don't know why--they have NEVER said those words to me. The months it has taken to get back on my feet financially and every other which way has been slow but sure. I never would have made it without my dad's encouragement, support and being available whenever I needed him. The things that the man in my life should have covered, were lovingly taken up by my father. He writes poetry to express his love for each of us and on Father's Day, I tried to do the same.......

There never seems to be enough of what I need until
I do the very best I can, and suddenly with skill
here comes dad, an honest man, he never seems to mind
that once again I need his help, again I’m in a bind.

I should be almost all grown up, no need of parental aid
I should be handling my own affairs, bills and groceries, paid.
By now I should have more knowledge of
how to maintain my van.
I should be able to tackle my yard,
it shouldn’t require the man.

But he’s there anyway, and when he comes
I feel like heaven is smiling.
When he comes he’s all about business,
I no longer feel like whining.
When he looks at my tires, fixes my door, teaches my son how to clean things
There aren’t enough words, not money nor song
to express my deepest feelings

But try, I will, because if there’s anything
I’ve learned from dad, it’s this:
No matter how much you do or say, it’s the heart that gives the gift
A heart that models a Father above, no purer one is found
It’s the source of dad’s strength and character;
it’s why his love knows no bounds.

And so, a poem, because once again
I’m trying to be more like you
A feeble attempt expressing my thanks
for bringing me up in the truth
…..for all you do
…..for just being you
Thanks, daddy.

That was beautiful.

Image

It made me feel good.

And it made me realize that I need to write a poem for my Grandma.

Close your brown eyes
There's relief in the skies

the clouds seem peaceful and free..
Feel the warmth of the sun ......
caressing your tongue..
as you breathe for eternity...

Two gentle brown eyes
devouring those skies..
the peace that solitude brings,
then back with a bump..
To life with a thump..
reality calls, with it's strings.....

Well Jimmmy boy did Bruce Almighty.
In some other film he said, "Alrighty."
I do what I can.
I'm such a lame fan.
But I'm mortal and not a "Once Bitee".

I *had* to put Cheryl's poem here. Couldn't resist.

The Young at Heart
by
Cheryl Raye

The young at heart shall rule the day.
Clearly, there could be no other way.
Time may lead your plans astray:
Handicap, illness, friends who betray.

When life is strange and in disarray,
We must always our dreams obey
And urge our inner-child to play.

If life becomes burdensome and gray
The heart searches for an eclipsing ray
And upon our strength we do survey
That the hopes and wishes of yesterday
Should be the sweet aroma of today.

The Pied Piper

Merry music and fun and play
Spreads cheer and warmth and gay
If the music stops
For tears to mop
Take time off and rest for the day

Here's to your happiness true
Wish I knew as good as you
To play the flute
And jokes to shoot
To tease and take you out of the blue

Dream of all the things worth living for
Dream of the moments that take your breath away
Dream of the sands of time holding still
And allowing you to live forever.
Dream for the sake of dreaming
For 'twas a dream that brought you here.
For when you wake up you'll be happy.
Live life as though it where a dream
And dream, for it is life!

By- Yours Truly
Happiness is abundant, when you look for it.
