English, Unpredictable art thou!

Postby mav » Wed Sep 07, 2005 6:17 pm

I'm grappling with English pronunciations. They are sooooo unpredictable. I don't know if it is specific to American English or what!? But here is my latest tongue-mind-twister-bender.

1. me·te·o·'rol·o·gy
2. me·te·o·'rol·o·gist
3. me·te·o·ro·'log·ic
4. me·te·o·ro·'log·i·cal·ly

Now, why can't 3 and 4 be pronounced the same as 1 and 2 ?! grrr......

because the 'Queens English' (which is what it is called) is the most gramatically complex language using the common alphabet of a-z..........and the enunciation can be murder.............
but the UK is full of dialects..........so don't spit hairs over it......

fluffy

PS.........aha!!!......but can you roll your 'R's..........we Scot's can but the English can't...................

Love it! I didn't understand these two things though....

tane furra mug
a skite oan the lug

funny....we're having online doric dialect lessons

And I read an Aberdeen today, reading about Kurt Cobain, Nirvana's lead singer, he was born in a town called Aberdeen in Washington state.
