Question: Are Carrey's films appropriate for children?
Answer: As long as you don't mind your children hopping around on what amounts to a severe sugar high, the films are fine. I would think twice before showing "The Mask" to a really hyperactive kid. Lots of people have reported getting 'contact highs' from this film and it could completely overload the system of a truly impressionable child. Proceed with caution.
On the other hand, kids like really warped, high energy things and Jim Carrey is one of those guys that kids just naturally take to. If you do your job as a parent and screen movies with your kids - like you're supposed to - then your kids won't pick up 'ideas' from the movies and go off and do weird things (like, presumably, Oliver Stone's kids do.) Sex is a reallysquirmy topic (in America, anyway) and Carrey's films have lots of silly sex jokes in them. If you are very sensitive to sex jokes then, for goodness' sakes, skip the movies, or don't leave 'em lying around for the kids to see.
There is nothing that you can do to stop your kids from doing impressions of Carrey, however. Kids just pick this stuff up at school, whether they have actually seen the movies in question or not. Carrey has a definite screen personality that has massive appeal to kids and they are going to imitate his lines ad nauseum. Just get used to it. This too shall pass.
"The Cable Guy" is not really a kid's movie. Respect the PG-13 on this one. It contains some violent scenes and deals with adult subject matter. Your kids may not be appropriately baby-sat by it. "Liar Liar" is a kid's movie (and an adult movie.) You'll be laughing at one thing while your kid will go home and drive you crazy for two hours with impressions of The Claw. Take the kids, they'll have a great time.
