'Growing Up Carrey' by Rita Carrey
09 Jul 2012

By Nicola West (Editor/Writer (UK))

In case you didn't know, Jim Carrey isn't the only 'Carrey' 'kid' with a fan following. His elder sister Rita is a television personality and radio broadcaster for 91.7 Giant FM in Hamilton, Canada.

No stranger to hardship and tragedy Rita has decided to document her family journey in a book. Provisionally titled 'Growing up Carrey' Rita plans to explore her family background and influences.

As is often stated by Jim as an influence, the Carrey family knew hardships. From working as janitors on basic pay, to being homeless and living in a VW van. They were no stanger to ill health either. Their mother suffered from kidney trouble and depression, "yet sometimes when things were really rough she was the one who jumped up and said, Hey, lets do something about it,".

"I actually am very grateful to her for it because I think it taught me a lot of patience and understanding and when the times are good to make sure you enjoy them," she said.

It's all about growing up with sadness, said Carrey. Theres the tragedy, the sorrow, and the laughter. "You have to have both to make good comedy, I think thats why hes (Jim) so funny," she said.

Seven years ago Rita faced her toughest time when her son was killed in a preventable accident which resulted in a traumatic and long legal battle.

"Its been seven years since my son passed away and the roads still the same," she said, addressing a fundamental issue that its cheaper for cities to leave the roads the way they are and face any legal charges than it is to fix the roads.

'Growing Up Carrey' is expected to hits store shelves early next year.

Rita can be listened to on 91.7 Giant FM Classic Rock on-
