Memorable Moment: Tribute to Sam Kinison
17 Sep 2014 By Amanda Jayne (Web correspondent)
Samuel Burl "Sam" Kinison (December 8, 1953 April 10, 1992) was an American stand-up comedian and actor. Kinison was known for his intense, harsh and politically incorrect humour. A former Pentecostal Preacher, he performed stand-up routines that were most often characterized by an intense style, similar to enthusiastic preachers, punctuated by his trademark scream. He died in a car crash on April 10, 1992.
A year after his death a tribute show was shown on TV where Jim Carrey appeared. The full show is online at YouTube, below is the part with Jim Carrey.
The video opens with a brilliant clip of Kinison making his film debut in Rodney Dangerfield's 1986 film "Back to School" playing a short-tempered professor. If you know nothing about Sam Kinison (like myself) this is one to see on a wet Wednesday, especially if you are a fan of Rodney Dangerfield too.
Then Jim Carrey bounds on stage, for the fans of 'Jim Carrey 90's Fashion Icon' you won't be disappointed. What the hell was going on with that!!
Interesting how Jim describes how drawn they were to each other from the start, in Jim's words because, "Sam was a Preacher who wanted to be a Comic and I am a Comic always striving for spiritual perfection." For those Fans who just know Jim Carrey for all his fantastic, brilliant comic genius, please take a look at the other Jim Carrey the rest of us know, click here. Not a celebrity fad for Jim but something he felt years ago even though he hid it in this video inside a comedy skit.
Some fab comedy reference to God Complexes and Preachers and you can hear the emotion in Jim's voice when he says, "I love him and learned a lot from him", which then leads into Jim doing one of Sam's favourite Carrey skits, "Nuclear Elvis". An hilarious look at the only thing left on the planet after a nuclear holocaust.
A lovey tribute to Sam and if you want to know more about someone whom Jim loved and learned from here is a link, click here.
