Ferndale gears up for "Majestic" production
23 Feb 2001

Yes, it's another chock-full of details report by our Ferndale correspondent, including news on a rather unusual strategy to insure Jim Carrey's security:

A typical day in Ferndale?
A typical day in Ferndale?
Ferndale was busy this week, as the local power company came and removed many street lamps in preparation for installing the Victorian style lamps for the filming of The Majestic.

On Wednesday the streets were busy with a large gang of movie people looking at the sets and the town, planning where they would lay cables and place lighting. They were quite a different breed from the local resident in Ferndale: many of them dressed in various shades of chic black, this one with an arty beret, that one carrying a heavy briefcase, many with clipboards or tiny cell phones.

They climbed inside the 'town hall' set which has completely surrounded the little US Bank building, and spent the afternoon looking at the theatre set close up and from across the street in front of the Ferndale Meat Company. What with the power company moving slowly up and down Main Street with their big equipment truck removing poles, and the usual construction, it was quite busy.

Meanwhile the diner set is preparing to come in to a spot being prepared at the end of Main Street.

There is some discussion about the movie company and Mr. Carrey feeling secure enough in this little town: so everybody here is disguising themselves as Jim Carrey. A cut-and-color mask of Jim's face was published in The Ferndale Enterprise this week. I guess nobody will know who the real Jim is, and he'll get lost in the crowd.

I talk to local people on the street, and I read all the local papers and watch local TV, and of course I also look out my window onto Main Street. Some of this information comes via the weekly Ferndale Enterprise; news is gathered, written and edited by Caroline Titus who does an award winning job as a writer, a seasoned newswoman and a civic leader. Juggling Majestic news and local stories is not easy and she does it spectacularly well. Me? I write novels, plays and theatre reviews: but Caroline lives and writes history at the oldest continuously published newspaper in California, founded in 1878. I could never do what she does.
